Hi! I’m Lisa Rae. I’m 33 years old, married and we have three wonderful children (9,5,3). I started my professional career with a degree in graphic design. After working as a creative director for a start up, dabbling in photography, design clients, and print making, I landed into floral design. My business partner and I opened a flower shop in 2017 in my hometown of Sonora, CA. It was called Wildbud (cause we were best buds). I sold my portion of the shop when we moved to South Dakota in 2021.
We bought our first home in the bustling metropolis of Wasta, SD in 2023 and I paused my professional work to be home with the kids and work on the old house. We homeschooled, we took down walls, we froze in the winter, we had our third baby in the spare room, we LIVED in that house. A few months later we bought the small plot right next door and started to ponder what we should do with it. FLOWER FIELD sprang into my brain. After all, how hard could it be? Spoiler alert - it was really hard! It was hours and weeks and months of research, seed starting, fence building, backbreaking work. But we did it!
The field burst into life and with it a whole new business that I managed from our little, old house. People came to pick, attended flower workshops, and bought market bouquets in town. The first season was such a success that we went for a second season in 2025. I added subscriptions, more weddings, I opened up the field to more you-picks, had so many photoshoots, and private workshops. It was another incredibly challenging and rewarding season.
Towards the end of the summer, the opportunity to open a shop in town was placed in front of us. I’d had many people already asking if I would open somewhere and to be honest, the notion sounded daunting. I’ve been there, done that. I know the grit and dedication it takes to open a brick and mortar (and stay open). It’s a lot. Despite my reluctance, we started to think and pray about it. We brainstormed and ran numbers and started to dream of the possibilities. My husband and I have had the dream of a coffee shop since our dating years, and we started to wonder…is this actually feasible?
So we prayed some more, felt the shift, and said yes. We sold our precious home and field, signed a lease agreement, moved back into Rapid City in October, and have been building the business infrastructure ever since. The shop will be a warm and welcoming atmosphere with world class coffee, a full service floral studio, and rentable rooms for classes/groups/meetings. It’s called Flatlander. We have put all of our energy and resources into this special place and we can’t wait to open our doors. Stay tuned!
